From a degree in business management to taking a deep dive into agriculture for the first time, Mr. Pisit’s story began when he was wondering what to do with his business degree and noticed the plot of land located right across from him that had freshly grown coconut trees. “Why did I start producing coconut oil? Well, it’s simple: we were not near a plot of land with rice on it, we were near coconuts. When life gives you lemons, you just make lemonade.”
In the beginning, there was a lot for Mr. Pisit to learn about coconuts. But he didn’t do it alone: he hired local farmers to help teach him the proper methods of raising coconuts. “Coconuts are not like other commodity crops like rice, corn, or sugar cane. It’s all about the weather. The amount of rainfall determines the amount of coconuts harvested,” he explains.
Working together with the coconut farmers, Mr. Pisit’s operations have spread since then and, today, his coconut farms are located in the central and southern Thai provinces of Ratchaburi, Petchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, and Samut Songkram. All total up to 3,000 square metres with approximately 100 contracted farmers who take care of their own farms with guidelines provided by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
“We are very selective when we choose which farmer to partner with,” he explains upon being asked, “we will go survey and interview the owner of the coconut farm first, then we will select the farmers who are already interested in practicing organic farming. Some farmers want to do it but don't know how, so we help them learn. This increases the possibility that we will certify them and the farmers will not have to change their farming method that much.”
Mr. Pisit takes care of the coconut oil production side of the operations. His factory is located in the Thai province of Ratchaburi their cold pressed coconut oil is considered to be the highest quality there is. The method of production used here is the centrifugation method. This is when the coconut milk and water is separated by spinning. Other methods include roasting and fermentation, however, these reduce the quality of nutrients and tend to leave that musky coconut smell that would be detected in common commodities.
Mr. Pisit went from a business major to being a coconut oil production wiz. He used what he already had and turned it into something more and began his all-natural journey.
