Hydrator vs. Moisturiser

What’s the Difference Between Hydrating and Moisturising?

Moisturisers and hydrators are both important to make sure the skin gets all the water it needs to combat dryness and dehydration to prevent early signs of ageing.

When you’re using a hydrator, it's improving your skin’s ability to absorb moisture and nutrients. Per say you're in a humid country, all you would need is a facial oil to help revive your skin, helping it be able to absorb the moisture from the air.

On the other hand, moisturising is about trapping and sealing in moisture to build the skin’s protective barrier, preventing water loss and keeping the skin soft and smooth. This is ideal for colder and dryer countries.

How to Know if You Need a Hydrator, Moisturiser or Both

If your skin tends to be on the dry side, it’s easy to assume that a healthy dose of moisturiser is all it takes to restore it. However, if your skin is dehydrated, you need a hydrator to get the job done.

To know if your skin is dry or dehydrated, it’s important to take note of your skin’s condition. The skin has a barrier that protects itself from damage and water loss. If you’re prone to having dry, flaky skin, it’s a sign that it’s not producing enough cells to form a protective barrier, making it unable to lock in moisture. And that’s where moisturisers come in.

Meanwhile, if you’re dealing with a dull complexion with fine lines and wrinkles becoming more noticeable, your skin may be battling dehydration.

People can have hydrated but dry skin or dehydrated but moisturised skin. Ideally it's best to always have both a moisturiser and a facial oil. Apply the moisturiser first and then the facial oil to lock it all in!

Final Verdict

Drinking plenty of water is still the easiest way to hydrate your skin, however, for some of us it just feels like a heavy chore. We recommend selecting a moisturiser based on your skin type and a hydrator based on the ingredient's benefits.
