Pregnancy: During this beautiful period of growth, a woman's body experiences hormonal changes that physically transforms her entire body — which oftentimes lasts well after pregnancy (postpartum) — and these change also affects the quality and texture of her hair.

What Causes Hair To Change During Pregnancy?

One of the main causes of changes in hair quality and texture in future and expecting mothers is stress. 

Stress is a leading cause of many hair issues including dryness, thinning, hair loss and less curl definition. These issues are magnified when hormones from pregnancy are added to the equation (specifically: progesterone and estrogen).

Progesterone increases scalp oil (sebum) production. On the scalp, excessive sebum can block pores and hair roots, which causes inflammation and contributes to hair thinning and loss.

Estrogen reaches the highest levels during the third trimester (six times more than before pregnancy!). Post-delivery, as estrogen levels drop, it severely shortens the hair's growth phase, which limits nutrients delivered to the follicles, causing hair thinning and increased hair fall.

How to Take Natural Care of Hair During and Post Pregnancy

There are two main things you can do: first, practice self-care to reduce stress. Self-care and mental well-being are linked. By taking better care of ourselves physically i.e. through hair care, we get a boost of dopamine and serotonin that does wonders for our emotional needs which, in turn, allows our body (and hair!) to thrive.
