Although the potential for a reaction varies from person to person, the products most commonly associated with irritation are the ones for treating acne and anti-aging.
Some physical exfoliating products such as scrubs can irritate the skin when used too often. Typically, the reactions are redness, peeling, scaling, and flaking. However, in most cases, you can treat your skin by using them so that, eventually, they don't cause any reactions.
How To Stop The Irritation
First of all, it's important to make sure that irritation is not the symptom of an allergic reaction. If your reaction is related to allergies, it might present with redness, itching, pain, and some scaling. But if you're just dealing with a nonallergic reaction, there are some easy ways to make the process less intense.
1. Start with applying a small amount
If you're applying a prescription product, it should come with detailed instructions for how to get started. In general, dermatologists recommend starting with a potentially irritating product just two or three days a week for at least two weeks or so to see how skin reacts. It's also important not to use too much, with just a pea-sized amount for their face.
2. Increase the uses slowly
After that, the skin should start tolerating the product, you can increase their usage to three or four times a week and every other night over several more weeks. For most people, it takes a few weeks to a month for their skin to fully tolerate the ingredients. However, it is important to keep in mind that not everyone can increase that much.
3. Moisturise skin regularly
While skin is adjusting, it may be helpful to mix the irritating product with a moisturiser or facial oil to dilute the product and ease the skin. In another case, make sure to apply your moisturiser or facial oil right after applying the other product, you could even put your moisturiser on as a foundation, then apply the other product, then apply another layer of moisturiser.
4. Apply to completely dry skin
Some people notice that using an irritating product right after taking a shower or washing their face with warm water causes more irritation because the warmth helps clear out the pores. Although that's a good thing, it can also make your face more vulnerable to irritants. Therefore, waiting at least 30 minutes after taking a warm shower before applying an irritating product is important.
Here's how to know when it just isn't for you
Unfortunately, even after all this trouble, some products are just not meant for particular skin—and that's totally normal. If irritation isn't getting better after a few weeks of trying these steps or if you notice severe irritation, it's time to check in with a professional.
Please be wary that the irritation is a side effect, and it's not necessarily a sign that the product is working. That means adding more of the products won't help you get faster results, it'll just cause more problems.
