Natural Way To Fix Dry Hair From Alcohol

First thing's first — alcohol is not a single chemical but contains differing properties. This means that depending on these properties, alcohol is either good for hair and skin or not so great. Two major types of alcohols are used to manufacture hair and skincare products: short-chain alcohols or drying alcohols and Fatty Acids or emulsifying alcohols.

Short-chain Alcohols (Drying Alcohols)

This type of alcohol evaporates quickly and so they are used in hair and skincare products as an additive to help decrease the time it takes for a product to dry once applied. However, the downside of using it is that these alcohols also draw moisture from hair and skin. Leaving the cuticle to roughen, dry, brittle, and frizzy hair, with skin, can cause dry and irritated skin. Some of the most common alcohols that you will find in hair care products are ethanol, SD alcohol, SD alcohol 40, denatured alcohol, propanol, propyl alcohol, and isopropyl alcohol.

Long-chain Alcohols (Fatty Alcohols)

Fatty alcohols are larger alcohols derived from natural sources such as vegetable oil. The higher amount of carbon content gives them completely opposite properties to their drying, short-chain cousins. Fatty alcohols provide hydrating and film-forming properties which absorb and lock in moisture keeping the hair from drying out. The most common fatty alcohols are lauryl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, myristyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, Cetearyl alcohol and behenyl alcohol.
