5 Reasons Why Hair Falls Out

1. Over-dyeing

Dyeing your hair too often, especially using bleach, can lead to greater chances of hair loss. Chemicals in hair dye will cause the hair to snap and break off. It also makes the hair dry and lack volume, causing hair to thin even further.

Suggestion: Try taking a break for at least a month and regularly use nontoxic hair conditioners or hair masks.

2. Heating

Hot styling tools, such as hairdryers, curling wands and straighteners, can make hair become dry and brittle. Eventually causing hair to fall out, especially if they're used daily. Dry heat generated from the tools weakens the hair shaft to become dry and frizzy.

Suggestion: Avoiding using high heat and going over the same section of hair can help minimise the damage. However, if it's unavoidable, try prepping your hair before with a hair oil to protect the hair strands from being exposed to the heat.

3. Stress

Stress is proven to have an impact on almost every aspect of your mental and physical wellbeing including your hair. It raises the levels of cortisol - known as stress hormone - in your body. This has negative impacts on the hair growth cycle; it affects nutrient absorption and the health of your scalp.

Suggestion: Learn and practice relaxation techniques or exercise regularly; meditation or yoga can help manage stress. Another effective solution is to have a good self-care routine which encourages a healthy relationship with yourself.

4. Hair Styles

Any hairstyle which requires a tight restraint can cause Traction Alopecia, a hair loss condition where hair is put under extreme tension. The most common hairstyles contributing to this hair loss condition are ponytails, braids, cornrows, buns and hair extensions. First, the hair shaft begins to be pulled, damaging the hair follicle and eventually causing hair growth to slow, and to possibly even stop.

Suggestion: Avoid tight hairstyles and give your hair some time to recover, the condition usually recovers itself naturally if the hair follicles are not permanently damaged.

5. Illness or condition

Up to 80% of hair loss is due to genetic factors. Try asking your parents whether thinning hair runs in your family. In some cases, hair loss is the result of a medical condition, such as alopecia, which is caused by an autoimmuninty.
